Diet restrictions are in place during orthodontic treatment to protect the appliances and preserve the health of your teeth. The temporary limitation of food choices typically has minimal impact on a person’s lifestyle, and these recommendations can help you to have a more pleasant experience and a more successful outcome. While Invisalign® clear aligners can be removed to eat and drink, conventional metal and ceramic braces cannot. Our experienced dentists and dental hygienists will review the types of food to avoid during your initial consultation (and at any future appointments if you would like a refresher). Additionally, we have provided the following list to aid you between appointments:
Avoid eating:
- Caramel
- Gooey chocolate
- Peanut butter
- Taffy
- Gummy bears
- Hard candies or cookies
- Popcorn
- Gum
- Nuts
- Ice
- Beef jerky
- Acidic foods
- Soda and sugary drinks
Use caution when eating:
- Chewy bread (bagels and rolls)
- Chicken wings
- Chips and pretzels
- Corn on the cob
- Apples
- Carrots
